How do I become certified?
You must first become a member of the IMBBA and keep your membership in good standing. The annual membership fee of $35.00 provides a quarterly newsletter informing you of industry developments, announcements, course information, and IMBBA sanctioned events. Membership also allows for access to the complete site, enrollment in courses and entry in our international members-only database.
How does this work?
The IMBBA has developed the points system of determining experience of the individual much like the points system the IMBBA uses to judge motorcycles. The individual certification process awards points to a member's experience, talents, and creative abilities. The IMBBA certification system awards points to the individual who documents their years of experience, education, skills sets, business practice, industry development, awards earned in bike shows, charity events sponsored, custom equipment certified, and media featuring your work.
As a member’s points increase, he or she is eligible to be certified with the awarding of one of the following titles: "ASSOCIATE", "TECHNICIAN", "BIKE BUILDER", and "MASTER BIKE BUILDER". Each title requires that you document your professional experience in the custom motorcycle industry: Everyone within one of the above categories is equal to all others who have the same title, based on industry experience. For a breakdown of how points relate to each title, download thecertification grid.
It does not matter if you create custom Harleys, restore antiques, build motocross bikes, design drag bikes, or just service motorcycles: The IMBBA has points criteria for all varieties of work experience that are credited to the member seeking certification. The IMBBA's responsibility is to document and maintain the points record that led to certification. An IMBBA certification provides the proof of your commitment to and achievement within the international custom motorcycle industry.
For those individuals that want to progress through the levels of certification, the IMBBA has a correspondence course for each title. Upon completion, a member will receive additional points towards certification at the level of the course. As a regulatory body, the IMBBA uses the certification process to ensure that a member's years of experience, trade skills, and professional development have been documented and demonstrated before awarding the individual a specific title, and guarantees that each member is equal to all other members holding the same title.
